Yin Yoga for Youth (16-18 year olds): Stillness is a Superpower (this is a FREE class)
Hey, I’m Jazz
(and this is my dog Marshmallow)
I am passionate about Yin Yoga! It has literally changed my life and it is so ‘in’ right now.
Yin Yoga is all about movement - movement of the body and our tissues, movement of breath, movement of thoughts, and movement of energy or Qi. The teachings are informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoist and Yogic Philosophies.
There are many benefits of Yin Yoga - on many different layers. Every day your body is different, therefore, every practice will feel different.
As a “movement specialist”, I love guiding students through a Yin Yoga practice. Simply coming into a shape to meet your edge, then resolving to remain still and allowing time and gravity to work our connective tissues can feel AMAZING!
You get to practice:
Patience
Awareness
Tolerance
Non-forcing and non-grasping
Moving, sensing and watching energy as it flows
Conserving energy, not over-stepping the edge
Observation, mindfulness and reflection.
Being gentle with yourself.
Students take these lessons off the mat, feeling more empowered to live life with a greater sense of compassion, ease, and grace. I believe that the Yin practice of ‘being’ offers a perfect balance to our often busy Yang lives of ‘doing’.
As Buddha said, “Knowing the mind, shaping the mind, and freeing the mind” is the doorway to awakening the root of happiness that we long for.
True happiness begins within. Take a journey into stillness and come practice with me to really discover all this for yourself! See you on your mat!
My Style of Teaching
My style of teaching is unique to me and my personal lived and learned journey through this life. I share my knowing and draw on this amazing experience to inform my kōrero/conversation with students.
I base my teaching around nature, the cycles of the moon and the physical cycles of Qi/chi around the meridian lines within our body. I encourage students to live in harmony with nature and let her help to balance our energy.
I invite students to take shapes and poses that create mild to moderate stress in a particular target area of connective tissue. And then ask them to move towards stillness. They stay for a time, as the connective tissue responds best to a slow, steady load. The body responds by making this space longer and stronger - which is exactly what we are wanting to achieve.
Students are invited to explore their edge as they come into a shape- whether this is physical, emotional or psychological.
Every class is different as I gently guide students to tune into their own unique body and rhythm - encouraging them to let the shape find its own way into the body.
Whether we’re sinking into a long-held yin pose or flowing dynamically with breath, my aim is to create space for deep connection—within the body, the breath, and the untamed energy that moves through us all.
My teaching style has been developed, from my own practice, and my own teaching. I have undertaken training with Gabrielle Harris, and others like Nico Luce and Joe Barnett. I have also gained further knowledge and inspiration from other leading yin-sters including Paul Grilley, Bernie Clark and Sarah Powers.
I have a varied background as a mother, daughter, sister, auntie, psychologist, mental health social worker, funeral celebrant, consultant and even as an alternative dispute resolution/conflict coach.
FAQs
-
Yin yoga is a quiet contemplative practice that works deeply into our body with passive, longer-held poses.
It targets the deepest tissues of the body, our connective tissues – ligaments, joints, bones, the deep fascia networks of the body and the meridians. This is contrast to a Yang yoga practice such as Vinyasa yoga which targets the muscles.
Energetically, Yin yoga improves the energy flow, enhancing the flow of chi in the organs. To be healthy, we need healthy organs as well as healthy muscles. It also offers wonderful emotional and mental health benefits.

Every yoga class is different and each is an opportunity to connect with yourself - your body, mind and your breath - whether through stillness in yin or fluid movement in flow.
During a Yin Yoga class, students are guided to move through a series of long-held, passive floor poses, for up to 5 minutes or longer. These mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues.
A Flow class is more dynamic and combines both yang yoga shapes and some yin yoga shapes. This class involves more energetic and fluid movements.

Yes! I offer modifications and encourage students to listen to their bodies. Yin is accessible to all levels, while flow classes can be adjusted to meet you where you are. If you're new, let me know so I can provide guidance tailored to your needs.
-
Absolutely not! Yoga is about creating space in your body and mind, not about being flexible. Flexibility is a by-product of consistent practice, but the real focus is on breath, awareness, and connection.

The centre has mats, blocks, straps and some bolsters. You are welcome to bring your own yoga mat and props if you prefer.
For yin yoga, a blanket or towel can be helpful for warmth and extra support.
Please arrive early so you can set up your mat and gather any props that might be needed - and remember to bring a water bottle!
-
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows for movement.
For Yin Yoga especially, layers are great since your body may cool down during long-held poses.

The cost to join a class whether online or in-person varies, depending on which pricing option you have taken, ranging from $20 to $25.
